Veronica Herman-Ashafa Obituary

VERONICA “KOKEY” HERMAN-ASHAFA, daughter of Murlene and David (deceased) Herman, was born November 16, 1966, and transitioned May 27, 2020, at 1:37 p.m. at Swedish Convenient Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Veronica accepted Jesus as her personal savior at an early age at Greater St. John MB Church, located at 4416 W Gladys Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, under the leadership of Pastor Reverend E. M. Lesure. She served in the Young Adult Choir as an alto singer and sometimes choir director. Veronica was also active in the Union District Baptist Youth Department Association of Chicago Inc. in her teenage years. In 2008, she united with the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene, located on the corner of Laramie and Ferdinand in Chicago. This was under the leadership of Pastor Ron Allen, who wed her to Thomas Perry Moore. She served in the children’s ministry, praise and worship team, and the choir, holding down the tenor section. She was also a faithful member of Sunday school and bible study. Her final church membership was here at the great Chance Ministries under the leadership of Pastor William L. Martin, Sr. There, Veronica served as the leader of the marriage ministry and served with the choir and children’s ministry. Veronica graduated from John Milton Gregory Elementary School at the tender age of twelve years old as the class salutatorian. She also attended beauty school at Debbie’s and was a good cook of different cuisine. Veronica loved to help people and later attended Applied Research Institute. With this certificate, she was able to supervise a certified nursing staff of ten. Together, they assisted mentally challenged consumers with positive avenues to become successfully integrated into the community. As you can tell, Veronica always loved music and was the life of the party. She was in love with her husband, Thomas Perry Moore “Straw-Perry,” who she knew well over 24 years. Besides her husband Perry, Veronica leaves to cherish: her beloved mother, Murlene Francis; five daughters, Quianta Morris, Shade’, Shola, Arianna Ashafa, and Thomasina Moore; three stepchildren, Kenyatta, Van, and Marguerite Moore; thirteen grandchildren, Lashiah, Latrice, Lyani, Latashia, Serenity, Zariah, Dalonte’, Laveyah, Sincere, Malachi, Miracle, Princess, and Delasia; eight step-grandchildren; two nieces, Rycal Herman and Paris Pelley; one nephew, Pierre Pelley; three sisters, Yolanda Pelley, Sonya Herman, and Barbara Thomas; one brother-in-law, Donald Pelley; one son-in-law, Wayne Morris; two greatnephews, Kyrell and Kamryn Gipson; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Overall, Veronica was a baby genius in her own right. Unlike many of us, she could learn how to do something by seeing it done only once.
