Johnny Johnson Obituary

The Heart of a True King: Celebration of Life Today, we are celebrating the life of Johnny Johnson. Johnny began his journey in Pembroke, Georgia, on Sunday, April 4th, in the year 1943. By the union of Ernest Johnson and Marie Bing, Johnny was the third among six children. He learned that, as the eldest brother, he would pose as a role model and protector even at an early age. After hard work in the peach state, Johnny reached the desire to pursue a better life in 1967, Chicago, at the age of twenty-four. It did not take long for him to fall in love with a witty, young woman. She became his wife and partner as they raised two daughters. Over the next 52 years, his acts with everyone who crossed paths with him modeled a heart of gold. With the birth of his grandchildren, Johnny adopted a new name: Poppie. As his family grew, the spread of his beloved name became his identifier to everyone who knew him in his neighborhood. As he would sit as a chaperone in his front yard, he was embraced with a tap of a horn as cars rolled by; he saluted each one with a wave. Children would come by to chat with Poppie and even get help fixing their bikes. Poppie radiated an unmistakable, pure love. Johnny enjoyed simple laughter with family, gardening, cooking up a good meal, fishing with loved ones, watching wrestling or a good western movie, and unforgettably, knowing all there was to know about cars and how to repair them. Despite not physically working under the hood in his latter years, he was a consistent source of information on vehicle maintenance. He was broadly adored more than anyone could measure. On June 8th, 2020, Johnny completed his work here on Earth. As he transitions into the spiritual realm, his legacy thrives through the lives of: his wife, Mrs. Ernestine Johnson; his two daughters and son-in-law; Cecelia, Ilene, and Darryl, Sr.; his five grandchildren, Ava, Arissa, Darryl, Jr., Amerald, and Lovie; two blessed greatgrandchildren, Bailey and Darryl III (Bob); one brother and best friend, Floyd; three sisters, Viola, Julie, and Carolyn; and a host of nieces, nephews, and countless friends. By God’s grace, may we all meet again one sweet day.
