Bettie Harper Obituary

Intelligent. Strong. Graceful. Phenomenal. Iconic. Queen.

These are just a few words to describe this beautiful woman, Mrs. Bettie Jean Harper. On the glorious Thursday of February 8, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, Bettie Jean Jackson was born to the union of Leo Jackson and Annie Bell Jackson. Early in her childhood, her family relocated to Chicago, Illinois. She attended Crown Community Academy for elementary school and then attended Farragut High School, where she graduated. Bettie later married Larry James Harper, Sr., who preceded her in death and into this union, they had a son, Eric James Harper, Sr. This union raised a total of five children. Bettie worked as a nurse in Dr. Bunchayo’s Medical Practice on the westside of Chicago for most of her adult life. She had a humanitarian heart and loved taking care of people. She worked there until her retirement. Bettie was also a member of the One Way Missionary Baptist Church, where her pastor was Reverend Clifton Marshall and then Reverend W.M. Marshall. Bettie served diligently on the Nurses Aide Auxiliary. She was one of the quietest, but also one of the best dressed women in the church. Bettie dressed so sharply her hobby turned into modeling. This she grew a love for, and everyone loved to see her come down the runway. She attended One Way until her husband took ill, and they could no longer attend physically. However, she still managed to have service at home every single Sunday and still dressed for it too. On the beautiful Sunday morning of May 17, 2020, our beloved Bettie Jean Harper quietly made her transition to her final resting place in Glory. She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Tamarra (Kenneth) Holloway and Tracey Harper; one son, Eric (Cassidy) Harper, Sr.; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her very best friend of 50 plus years, Wanda Covington; one sister, Barbara McCree; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and supportive friends. Preceding her in death and meeting her at the Heavenly gates were her parents, Leo Jackson and Annie Bell Jackson; two sisters, Henrine Owens and Earline Hughes; her husband, Larry James Harper, Sr.; two sons, Dana Keith Jackson, Sr., and Larry James Harper, Jr.; and one loving granddaughter, Errontina Vanessa Renee Jackson. Bettie, Mama, Ma, Grandma, Honey Child, Popcorn, Chi-Chi, Aunt Bettie, no matter what you called her, she was loved, and she sincerely loved each and every one of you
